Autograph letter (copy) signed Samuel Cherry to: "My dear friend" [Col. William S. Smith], March 17, 1803, Albany.

Cherry requests Smith's assistance on behalf of Deborah Sampson Gannett, who is publishing a history of her life. Gannett served in the United States army during the Revolutionary War. She enlisted as a private under the name Robert Shurtliff, was wounded in the battle of Tarrytown, witnessed the capture of Cornwallis, and was honorably discharged in November 1783.
